Microsoft has announced a new strategy and product for on-premise SharePoint.
Microsoft has introduced SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SPSE), which will be the latest version of on-premise SharePoint, replacing the current SharePoint Server 2019. This product also changes the strategy regarding on-premise versions of SharePoint – SPSE will operate on similar principles as the cloud-based SharePoint Online and will be continuously updated to the latest version. This marks the end of the era of on-premise upgrades to newer SharePoints that were released every three years. It will be possible to upgrade to SPSE either from SP 2019 or directly from SP 2016 (without having to go through SP 2019).
